General Communication Theory
Course description
Each day the important personal decisions we make, the relationships we experience, and the media we consume can be systematically observed, described and explained by communication theory. By developing an understanding of a variety of key concepts and theories of human communication, students will achieve an understanding that permits an informed and useful interpretation and explanation of human communicative events.
This course examines concepts and contexts relevant to the study of human communication. Specifically, it explores basic elements in the communication process as they occur in the contexts of interpersonal relationships, groups, public speaking, organizations, media and cultural contexts.
Course objectives and tentative content
Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts and theories in the study of human communication and develop an awareness of the issues at stake in the study of communication
2. Manifest basic knowledge and understanding of the various contexts of human communication and how they differ from each other, including intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, public communication, organizational communication, intercultural communication, and mass communication, plus other contexts (such as the new media technologies and public relations) as time permits
3. Show an understanding of the interaction between the verbal and non-verbal forms of communication in various contexts
4. Recognize the important, meaningful roles that non-spoken behaviors fulfill during our communication interactions with others
5. Transfer an understanding of various theoretical communication fundamentals to the social contexts experienced in both your everyday and professional lives
6. Develop and improve listening, observational skills, critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
